The Miami Police arrested a man of Cuban descent accused of pulling a firearm in a grocery store in the heart of Downtown and making death threats against individuals of Venezuelan nationality before fleeing.
Around 8 a.m. last Saturday, Gonzalo González, 57 years old, entered Stop and Shop Food and Deli, located at 49 NE Second Ave, and requested a vape. However, moments later, he pulled out a gun and made terrifying comments about killing Venezuelans, which caused panic among the establishment's employees.
According to the arrest report cited by the channel Local10 News, an employee of the business told the police that the black gun González pulled from a backpack was a Glock. The individual racked the slide of the weapon, and a saleswoman dove to the floor in fear, taking cover behind the counter.
The incident was captured by the surveillance cameras and was corroborated by two other employees of the store. Soon after, the suspect left the area.
Thanks to a search alert and a tip from one of the employees, the police officers were able to locate and apprehend González later on. At the time of the arrest, he was found in possession of the gun and gold and silver coins in plastic capsules inside the backpack.
According to the police report, the detainee repeatedly interrupted the officers while they were reading the Miranda rights to him in Spanish. He shouted that he didn't need a lawyer because -he said- “God is my lawyer and I am King David.”
He also assured that they "had put him in this world to kill Venezuelans because they are attacking and murdering Cubans".
Additionally, he made disturbing threats to the authorities: "The agent who put the handcuffs on me is going to die. The agents who were involved in my arrest are going to die, and their police vehicles will be engulfed in flames, leaving only their ashes."
González will have to face justice for the charges of improper display - harmful use of a firearm and aggravated assault with the intent to commit a felony.
The accused appeared before the court this Monday, but was forcibly removed from the hearing when he attempted to speak with the judge, according to a report from Telemundo51.
The suspect remained incarcerated at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade, with a bond of $7,500.
