A Cuban mother announced this Wednesday that she plans to self-deport following her husband's detention by ICE during a routine appointment, a decision she communicated amidst tears in a video that went viral on social media.

Alexa Batista reported this Tuesday that at the immigration office in Houston they demanded that “one of the two had to stay” and that the other had to leave with the children and return without them at a later date.

"I'm going to self-deport. No one is taking my children away from me, damn it!" she stated.

According to her account, the agents did not explain what would happen to her partner and scheduled an appointment for her on November 6, this time without the minors.

In light of the risk of being detained by ICE on that occasion, she has announced the difficult decision to leave the country she worked so hard to reach.

The woman claims that there were already other migrants handcuffed at the scene and that, after being separated from her family, she was in shock, unable to drive due to the trembling in her hands, which is why she had to wait for an acquaintance to pick her up.

" They treat me like a dog... they didn't even let me speak", he said in the video. "They don't care that one has children... they believe in no one", he claimed amid cries of anguish.

On his social media, he asked for financial help to cover immediate expenses: “I need you to help me with the fundraising, please share widely.”

The woman remembered the risk she faced to reach the United States —“I almost drowned at sea”— and condemned the lack of transparency in the process following her husband's arrest.

The report comes in a context of increasing immigration arrests by ICE and coincides with another similar case reported in San Antonio, which has raised alarms in immigrant communities regarding family separations and a lack of transparency in procedures.

Detentions by ICE are causing a great emotional distress and family separation, profoundly affecting Cuban families. These actions leave mothers and children in a vulnerable situation, without the support of their detained loved ones.

People detained by ICE can file appeals or seek legal assistance to try to halt their deportation. However, the process can be complicated and requires the support of attorneys specialized in immigration.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Detention of Cuban Immigrants by ICE

Why are Cuban immigrants being detained during routine appointments with ICE?

The detentions of Cuban immigrants by ICE during routine appointments are part of a tightening immigration policy in the United States. ICE detains individuals who show up for immigration appointments without prior notice, even if they are complying with the legal process and have no criminal records. This practice has been criticized as a violation of due process and for unjustly separating families.

What can detained Cuban immigrants do to avoid deportation?

Cuban immigrants detained by ICE can file appeals or seek legal assistance to attempt to stop their deportation. The process can be complicated and requires the support of attorneys specialized in immigration. Additionally, it is advisable for individuals to attend their immigration appointments accompanied by a lawyer to ensure a fairer process.

What are the emotional consequences of immigration detentions for Cuban families?

ICE detentions are causing significant emotional distress and family separation, deeply affecting Cuban families. These actions leave mothers and children in a vulnerable situation, without the support of their detained loved ones. Additionally, the emotional trauma generated by forced separation can have lasting effects on the mental health of those affected, especially children.

What impact does the immigration policy of the United States have on Cubans seeking asylum?

The immigration policy of the United States has hardened its approach towards immigrants, affecting those seeking asylum, such as many Cubans. Despite meeting the requirements and having no criminal record, many face detentions and deportation proceedings without adequate review of their cases. This reflects a lack of sensitivity towards the realities of those fleeing authoritarian regimes and seeking refuge in the United States.
