Cándido Fabré speaks out against the censorship of Celia Cruz: “Celia deserves a thousand tributes.”

The singer, who has defended the Cuban regime for years, called for a tribute to Celia Cruz in her birthplace of Santo Suárez, following the censorship of the homage for the singer's centenary at the Cuban Art Factory.

The Cuban musician Cándido Fabré, who has supported the Cuban regime for years, joined the voices condemning the censorship of the tribute for the centenary of Celia Cruz in Havana this Tuesday, stating that the "Guarachera of the World" deserves all the honors, especially in her homeland.

In a post on his Facebook account, Fabré wrote: “Eternal Celia Cruz, Cuban glory, deserves a thousand tributes, but here in her homeland, in her Santo Suárez. Without political grudges, applause for the true sonera, Guarachera of the world. Eternal glory.”

"Today radio, the press, and television must give the youth the opportunity to know who Doña Celia Cruz was, is, and will be. I, Cándido, son of Sixta and papa Neto," the singer added, acknowledging that the Queen of Salsa was censored for decades by the Cuban regime.

The musician's statements come after the controversy over the cancellation of the event "A Chair for Celia", planned at the Fábrica de Arte Cubano (FAC), where tribute would be paid to the artist as part of the celebrations for her centenary.

The venue's management canceled the event citing “scheduling issues,” which sparked strong criticism on social media and among artists both on and off the island.

Despite the censorship, days later a mass was held in honor of the legendary singer at the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in the Vedado neighborhood, attended by musicians, clergy, and admirers of the iconic Cuban voice.

Celia Cruz, a symbol of music and Cuban identity, was banned from official media of the regime since her departure from the island in 1960.

His name and legacy, however, continue to inspire new generations both inside and outside of Cuba.
