On the Eve of Hurricane Melissa's Impact, currently at category 5 and heading towards the eastern part of the island, as tension and fear are felt throughout the eastern region, the San Juan Methodist Church in Santiago de Cuba announced that it will open its doors to provide shelter for the most vulnerable individuals in the community.
Pastor Darlon Bermúdez announced this Monday on his Facebook profile that the temple is available to host those in need of a safe place during the passage of the weather phenomenon.
"We do not have enough mattresses, but we do have a place of refuge and love. Christ is waiting for you with open arms," wrote the religious leader, quoting Psalm 84:3 as a message of hope.
The initiative, inspired by the solidarity action of the Methodist Church of Guantánamo during the challenges of 2024, aims to provide support to those in greatest need amid the material shortages and lack of adequate shelters faced by a large part of the population in Santiago.
Bermúdez explained that, although resources are limited, the will to serve prevails. “Our mission is to open the house of God to those who have nowhere to go,” he stated in his message, which was quickly shared and praised by hundreds of users on social media.
While the Civil Defense maintains a cyclone alert for several provinces in eastern Cuba, the gesture of this church has become a symbol of faith and humanity in times of uncertainty.
In a city preparing to withstand the onslaught of Hurricane Melissa, solidarity once again becomes a refuge and a source of hope.
Also this Monday, the Catholic Church called on the faithful to pray for the protection of Santiago de Cuba in light of the imminent arrival of Hurricane Melissa, a category 5 storm that threatens to impact the eastern region with winds exceeding 280 kilometers per hour.
