The winds of Hurricane Melissa are beginning to be felt in Santiago de Cuba, where the sky has turned a dark gray and the sea is crashing violently against the southern coast.

The calm before the cyclone, captured in a video shared by independent communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, reveals a scene with intense waves along the shores of Santiago Bay.

In one of the clips published on Facebook, the choppy bay can be seen under a cloudy sky as the wind stirs up foam.

In another video, Mayeta Labrada shared footage showing the winds beginning to topple trees and tear down power lines, a scene that reflects the city's vulnerability in the face of the approaching hurricane.

The images convey the progressive deterioration of time in the eastern province: a silence broken by the roar of the sea, an ever-fading light, and the shared feeling among thousands of Santiago residents that a storm is about to arrive.

While Melissa sails through the Caribbean seas, the population watches the horizon with anxiety. In every gust and every wave crash, the impending arrival of a hurricane can be sensed in the air.
