Amid the severe flooding affecting eastern Cuba following Hurricane Melissa, a gesture of solidarity has moved the residents of the municipality of Guamo, in Granma province.
In a post made in the Facebook group “Revolico Guamo,” the young man Odanni González Ferrales offered his selfless assistance to the evacuees who remain at the Jovavo center, one of the locations set up by local authorities.
“For all my friends from Guama who are evacuated in Jovavo, for the elderly who need to leave the center for medication, for children who need to visit the clinic for any reason, and for similar issues, I will take them at no charge,” said the young man in one of the many acts of solidarity that have emerged during these days.
"I am the guy with the red engine. Strength, my people, we can overcome everything. We are all alive, and that alone is a win," González wrote in his message.
The post, widely discussed among internet users, has been seen as a demonstration of community solidarity and resilience in an area where heavy rains and the overflowing of the Cauto River have caused mass evacuations and serious damage to homes and crops.
Guamo, a rural municipality in Granma, has been one of the areas most affected by the floods of the Cauto in recent days.
González's message, accompanied by words of encouragement to his neighbors, has been received with gratitude by the residents and members of the group, who highlighted his gesture during a time of uncertainty and scarcity.
While the authorities continue recovery efforts in the eastern part of the country, stories like that of this young man with the "red motorcycle" reflect the spontaneous solidarity of the Cuban people in the face of the emergency and the lack of official resources.
The eastern region of Cuba has been the scene of intense rescue operations, especially in areas like Guamo, in Granma province, where the rising waters of the Cauto River caused severe damage.
Evacuation efforts continue in affected communities, with active participation from rescuers, neighbors, and emergency personnel who have had to operate under extreme conditions.
The municipality was virtually submerged after the river overflowed, and the images shared by residents show flooded homes, impassable streets, and destroyed crops, resulting in a situation of widespread vulnerability.
The El Mango community, also in the Cauto region, was one of the hardest hit by the flooding, and more than a hundred people had to be evacuated by rescuers due to the collapse of basic infrastructure.
The urgency with which the evacuations have been carried out, as evidenced in the forced displacement of an entire town due to the rapid rise of the waters, highlights the magnitude of the disaster and the limited official response capacity.
In this context, spontaneous citizen gestures, such as that of a young man who offered his motorcycle to help those evacuated, have become symbols of resilience and community support in the face of the emergency.
