A Cuban resident in Guanabo, in the municipality of East Havana, has gone viral on TikTok after sharing her views on the economy on the island, claiming that despite the crisis, there are still "people with money," although they do not represent the majority of the population.
"My life, here people do have money, but it’s not common. There are individuals who have relatives abroad; they help them financially or set up a small business for them," the young woman commented in a video published on her account @gelylaflaki.
The woman explained that she lives in a tourist area of Guanabo and that many of the properties that look luxurious belong to Cubans living abroad. “I don’t know where Cubans get the money from, but they buy them. Here, a nice house can cost 150 dollars a day, and those who rent them are Cubans who live outside and come with their families,” she assured.
According to the user, in Cuba "there are those who appear to be well off" thanks to remittances or income related to tourism, but the reality for most is very different: "There are many more who don't have money than those who do," she concluded.
The video, which has garnered tens of thousands of views, has sparked debate on social media, where many users agree that the appearance of prosperity in certain tourist areas contrasts sharply with the widespread poverty and shortages affecting the Cuban people.
In recent years, the sending of remittances and the opening of private businesses have allowed a small segment of the population to access goods and services that are out of reach for the majority.
However, the deep economic crisis, high prices, and inflation in Cuban pesos have left the rest in a situation of increasing social inequality.
