Nine days after the conclusion of the espionage trial against former Cuban Economy Minister Alejandro Gil, the regime remains silent. It has not even acknowledged that the process has ended. From Spain, his sister, former presenter María Victoria Gil, broke this silence and stated that the ex-official is accused of spying for the CIA and that the life sentence “is already predetermined.”

In an interview with journalist Mario J. Pentón for Martí Noticias, María Victoria stated that a "very reliable" source, which she cannot disclose, confirmed to her that the espionage charge against her brother is "in favor of the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States."

"I was left speechless when I received this information," he confessed. "I don’t believe my brother was capable of becoming a spy for any country, let alone a spy for the CIA. But that is the information I have; it is corroborated, it is verified, I am not providing false information."

The sister of the former minister frames the accusation within an old logic of the Cuban system: blaming the United States to avoid taking responsibility for internal failures. "Always looking to the United States for blame for the failures of a failed, deeply corrupt system that has managed to completely and absolutely destroy an entire country," she stated.

“Alejandro categorically denies the espionage.”

María Victoria stated that, according to her sources, the former minister has rejected the charge of espionage that has been attributed to him from the very beginning.

“Alejandro Miguel Gil Fernández categorically denies each and every one of the facts related to espionage for the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States. He denies it emphatically, point by point, from the onset of the investigations,” he stated.

He also stated that the defense attorney, identified as Dr. Solar, did a "brilliant" job and countered "point by point" all the charges against the former czar of the Cuban economy.

However, for her the outcome is predetermined. “He will not escape life imprisonment. That sentence is predictable,” she asserted. “I say this with all the confidence that my profession as a lawyer gives me and based on how the events have unfolded.”

State Security, "encrypted" files, and justice under control

María Victoria insisted that her brother's case does not go through an independent justice system, but rather through the repressive apparatus.

He recalled that the espionage files in Cuba are not handled by the Attorney General’s Office, but directly by State Security, in “encrypted” and opaque processes where it is very difficult to determine whether they pertain to real events or are a grand lie fabricated to discredit someone.

"It is very difficult to determine when a case is truly based on real facts or if it is a case built on a great lie to incriminate someone and lead them to the maximum possible sentence," he explained.

According to his perspective, when the entire leadership is engaged in corruption, the regime requires a cause strong enough to sacrifice one individual and save the rest. "In a country where the entire leadership is corrupt, how can you judge an official for corruption, money laundering, or influence peddling? They would have to judge them all," he questioned.
