A Cuban-born woman remains in custody charged with shooting her son during a domestic dispute in Hialeah Gardens on Sunday afternoon, according to official reports.

The mother, identified as Grisel Pérez, 63 years old, was arrested following the shooting reported inside her home, located at Northwest 88th Avenue and Northwest 113th Street, in Miami-Dade County, according to Telemundo 51.

Emergency responders from the Miami-Dade Fire Department who arrived at the scene after receiving an emergency call found the victim, Joel Pineda, 36 years old, with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Due to the severity of his condition, he was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Pérez told the Hialeah Gardens Police Department agents that her son came home earlier on Sunday and she let him in, but he "was acting strangely, as if he were under the influence of drugs."

The woman stated that while sitting in the living room, Pineda took out a .38 caliber revolver and fired a shot that hit a decorative fireplace. They argued, and she told him to leave; he got angry and began breaking furniture, and then went out to the backyard, where he made a second shot into the ground.

According to the arrest report, Pérez went to his bedroom, retrieved his own gun, confronted his son, and demanded that he leave the house. At some point, the woman shot him and then called 911.

The investigators found both firearms in the residence. Pérez was arrested and is facing charges of aggravated assault with a firearm.

The police seized videos from a surveillance camera installed at a back door, facing the area where the events took place, as evidence. An officer noted that the footage supports the account given by the accused.

A woman who identified herself as Pérez's cousin told Telemundo 51 that she could have acted in self-defense and mentioned that the man had experienced drug problems in the past. "I feel devastated; it's a really ugly situation," stated Elizabeth Brito.

According to court records, in January 2020, Pérez requested a protection order for domestic violence against his son.

The man is hospitalized in serious but stable condition, the television channel specified.

When Pérez appeared in court this Monday, the judge appointed a public defender and denied bail. Tomorrow, Tuesday, the accused will appear again before a judge as investigations into the case continue.
