A Cuban woman was seriously injured and an armed man died on Tuesday in an apartment building in western Miami-Dade, authorities reported.

The incident occurred shortly before 4:00 p.m. at the Monte Carlo Apartments complex, located at the intersection of Northwest 72nd Avenue and 3rd Street, south of SR 836 highway, according to local media.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO), officers responded to the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls regarding gunshots. Upon arrival, they found a woman with gunshot wounds to the upper body.

"The agents were able to rescue the woman, and the rescue team transported her to the hospital," said a spokesperson for the MDSO cited by CBS Miami.

The victim was transferred to the Jackson Memorial Hospitals Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, according to confirmations from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and several local media outlets.

The woman was identified by her family as Yudaisy Salgueiro, 47 years old, a resident of Miami and a healthcare professional. WSVN shared a photo of the victim, confirming her identity, taken from her Facebook profile where she states she is from Pinar del Río, Cuba.

Neighbors pointed out to the agents the apartment where the attacker was located, and at that moment, an armed confrontation occurred. “When they discovered an individual armed with a firearm, an exchange of gunfire took place between the suspect and three of our agents,” explained Assistant Sheriff Eric García in statements to WSVN.

After the gunfire, the agents withdrew to a tactical position and waited for the Special Response Team (SRT). When the team entered the apartment, they found the suspect dead. It has not yet been confirmed whether he died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds or crossfire.

A woman who spoke with reporter Alexis Boentes from Telemundo 51 described: “Something exploded in the second-floor elevator of the building, the girl came out screaming, and the man followed behind. It seems he came out of the elevator and shot at her, then she ran down the stairs yelling for someone to help. After that, we heard the gunshots and the sound of windows breaking... but I did see when he shot at the girl, and she came out screaming.”

Regarding the relationship between both, the witness stated that they had been a couple.

Other neighbors described the chaos inside the building. One resident told WSVN, “I saw when he shot the woman and she ran out screaming.”

The police closed several streets in the area, including traffic on NW 72 Avenue and Flagler Street, resulting in delays on Tuesday afternoon. The community account Only in Dade shared a video on social media showing the police deployment in the area.

The case is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), as is routine when officers fire their weapons while on duty.
