The Cuban creator Gabriel Alcántara (@gabrielalcantara1104) went viral on TikTok after sharing a reflection on the differences between raising children in Cuba and in the United States. In his video, Alcántara questions how many parents outside the island substitute love and attention with gifts and technology, which, according to him, leads young people to grow up without affection or family values.
“Boys raised here are never quite like those from Cuba, but that is not the fault of the children, it's the fault of the parents,” said Alcántara, who lamented that children abroad “lock themselves in their rooms with a PlayStation” while their parents “work to buy them shoes and the latest television.” The Cuban insisted that material things can never replace affection or education at home.
The video has garnered over 21,000 likes and nearly 2,000 comments, making it one of the most discussed pieces of content among Cubans on social media. Many followers supported its message, asserting that "children raised in Cuba are more affectionate, humble, and respectful."
"That's why my husband and I decided to raise our children Cuban-style. With respect, discipline, and without so much luxury," wrote one user, while another commented: "I work in a school and what you say is true. I prefer the kids raised in Cuba."
However, other users disagreed. Some defended the education of children born in the United States and asserted that behavior does not depend on the country, but on upbringing at home. "My children are born here, educated and respectful. It all depends on the values that one instills," they commented.
Amid applause and criticism, Alcántara’s reflection addressed a sensitive topic for many Cuban emigrant parents: how to maintain family values in a different society. His video has sparked a collective conversation about love, family time, and the importance of teaching children to value affection more than material possessions.
