The Lady in White Mercedes de la Caridad de la Guardia Hernández passed away this Sunday in Matanzas at the age of 59.
The news was announced by Leticia Ramos Herrería, also a Lady in White, who stated that De la Guardia Hernández was a "brave Cuban who had been suffering from health issues for several years, yet continued to remain active."
"Mercy, as we affectionately called her, was the heart of the Cárdenas delegation. Despite so much repression, jail time, and beatings, she always drew on her charisma and made us laugh," remarked the opposition member.

"Today, far from my homeland, I still feel the pain of her departure, for I will not be able to accompany her on her journey to heaven, where I know God will welcome her under His great mantle," she concluded.
The leader of the organization, Berta Soler, echoed the news: “We extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends. We have lost a brave fighter, a Lady in White. May God keep her in Glory. Eternal rest, sister.”
This is the second piece of bad news to hit the opposition organization in recent weeks.
In mid-November, it was reported that the grandson of Olaida del Castillo, a member of the opposition movement, passed away in Havana due to one of the mosquito-borne viruses that have infected a large part of the population in Cuba.
The little one died in the hospital where he had been admitted for several days in serious condition, fighting for his life.
