The Cuban singer La Diosa called on the people of Cuba to take to the streets and demand their freedom during a demonstration held this Wednesday in front of the Versailles restaurant in Miami, as part of the global protests for Human Rights Day.
“The Cuban people are a people who have suffered immensely. We, who are here by their side, are aware and understand how difficult it is for them to realize that they need to take to the streets,” expressed the artist.
La Diosa, one of the regime's most critical voices, acknowledged the fear that prevails among Cubans in the face of state repression, but insisted that only collective action could break the government's control over the population.
"We know that you are afraid, we know that they oppress you, we know that there are many young people imprisoned because of the same old story. But the day they understand that if we all come out together, they will not be able to stand against us, against a people in the streets, they will be free," he stated.
The artist, who has repeatedly denounced the lack of freedoms on the island and the situation of political prisoners, expressed having “a great deal of faith that the people of Cuba will take to the streets en masse and put an end to their suffering.”
"May they be free once and for all," he concluded to the applause of those present.
In the case of La Diosa, her message does not come from comfort or forgetfulness. The singer actively participated in the July 11th protests of 2021 in Havana and is well acquainted with the regime's repression.
The demonstration in front of Versailles, a symbol of the Cuban exile community in Miami, brought together activists, artists, and community members who demanded the release of political prisoners and respect for human rights in Cuba.
The call from La Diosa joins those of other artists and activists who, from exile, have urged for unity and citizen mobilization in response to the worsening economic crisis, censorship, and repression by the Havana regime.
One of them, Alexander Otaola, also called on the Cuban people to peacefully protest for their freedom on Human Rights Day, emphasizing the need to highlight repression and demand basic rights.
