With just $500 in his pocket and a promise, the Cuban Juan Hernández embarked on a journey in 2022 that would take him to the United States, where he is now the owner of a business.
In statements to Univisión, he shared that on April 22, 2022, he left Cuba in search of a better future, driven by a promise of faith to the virgins who, according to him, accompanied him throughout the journey.
"It was to try to seek a better dream for myself and for my family. My family always supported me and has been attentive to me and my projects in order to give them a better future,” the now businessman recalled."
He said that in a short time he went from being a veterinarian in Cuba to owning his own welding business in the United States.
"When one leaves Cuba with so little, everything gained outside has double the value: that of sacrifice and that of freedom," says Juan.
Recalling his arrival at the border, he explains that when he got to Texas, he had to start from scratch, as he had no contacts, no resources, and his English was very limited.
At that time, he took on temporary jobs until he learned the trade of welding.
Explain that little by little, with discipline and faith, he managed to set up a small workshop in San Antonio, which he named “Las 3 vírgenes cubanas”.
"Before leaving my country, I prayed a lot to the three virgins and to Our Lady of Guadalupe to take me safely to the United States. I promised them that if I succeeded, I would name my business after them," she recounted.
Today, Juan Hernández's family workshop stands as an example of effort and resilience within the Hispanic community, especially during a time of discouragement for thousands of immigrants who feel persecuted in the country.
His wife, Carmen Hurtado, of Mexican origin, accompanies him in this new phase, ensuring that the Virgin of Guadalupe has been the spiritual guide of their marriage.
Both have had the opportunity to visit the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico to give thanks for the blessings received. From there, they sent a message to those who, like them, left their homeland in search of a better future:
"Never stop fighting. Hold on to faith, work with discipline and consistency. Dreams do come true", Hernández stated, filled with emotion as he recalled arriving with just 500 dollars."
Today, "Las 3 vírgenes cubanas" is not only a successful business but also a symbol of faith, sacrifice, and hope for hundreds of immigrants seeking to make their way in the United States.
Stories like that of Juan Hernández reflect the reality of thousands of Cubans who, faced with a lack of opportunities on the island, have decided to emigrate. However, far from giving up, many have managed to overcome challenges thanks to their effort, hard work, and deep faith.
