With just $500 in his pocket and a promise, the Cuban Juan Hernández embarked on a journey in 2022 that would take him to the United States, where he is now the owner of a business.
In statements to Univisión, he shared that on April 22, 2022, he left Cuba in search of a better future, driven by a promise of faith to the virgins who, he claims, accompanied him throughout the journey.
"It was about trying to find a better dream for myself and my family. My family has always supported me and has been there for me and my projects to give them a better future", the now entrepreneur recalled.
He said that in a short time, he went from being a veterinarian in Cuba to owning his own welding business in the United States.
"When one leaves Cuba with so little, everything gained abroad holds double value: that of sacrifice and that of freedom," says Juan.
Recalling his arrival at the border, he explains that upon reaching Texas he had to start from scratch, as he had no contacts, no resources, and his English was quite limited.
At that time, he worked temporary jobs until he learned the trade of welding.
He explains that little by little, with discipline and faith, he was able to set up a small workshop in San Antonio, which he named "The 3 Cuban Virgins".
"Before leaving my country, I prayed a lot to the three virgins and to the Virgin of Guadalupe to take me safely to the United States. I promised them that if I succeeded, I would name my business after them", he recounted.
Today, Juan Hernández's family workshop stands as a testament to effort and resilience within the Hispanic community, especially during a time of discouragement for thousands of immigrants who feel targeted in the country.
His wife, Carmen Hurtado, of Mexican descent, accompanies him in this new chapter, ensuring that the Virgin of Guadalupe has been the spiritual guide of their marriage.
Both have had the opportunity to visit the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico to give thanks for the blessings received. From there, they sent a message to those who, like them, left their homeland in search of a better future:
"Never stop fighting. Hold on to faith, work with discipline and perseverance. Dreams do come true", Hernández asserted, feeling emotional as he recalled his arrival with just 500 dollars.
Today, "Las 3 vírgenes cubanas" is not only a successful business but also a symbol of faith, sacrifice, and hope for hundreds of immigrants seeking to make their way in the United States.
Stories like that of Juan Hernández reflect the reality of thousands of Cubans who, faced with a lack of opportunities on the island, have chosen to emigrate. However, far from giving up, many have managed to succeed thanks to their effort, their hard work, and their deep faith.
