Flood alert in low-lying areas of El Vedado after heavy rains

Residents point out that the flooding is not only due to the rain, but also to the inadequate maintenance of the sewage system and the accumulation of garbage in the streets.

The Plaza de la Revolución Administration Council issued an alert this Sunday on its Facebook page due to water accumulation in low-lying areas of El Vedado following the rains from the previous night and early morning.

The message urges the public to exercise caution and discipline by avoiding areas affected, preventing children from playing in these spaces, and staying alert to the guidance provided by the authorities.

"The persistence of rain during the night and early morning has caused small accumulations in low-lying areas of our territory. We urge residents in these locations and surrounding areas," stated the municipal authority in its announcement.

"Stay informed of the guidelines issued by the authorities and follow them with discipline and RESPONSIBILITY," he added.

However, the comments from the residents in the post itself reflect a growing discontent with the structural situation of the capital.

Neighbors point out that the floods are not only a consequence of the rain, but also of the poor maintenance of the drainage systems and the accumulation of waste in the streets.

"That never used to happen. Right now, all the sewage systems are blocked," said one user, to which another clarified that the rains wash away the accumulated garbage and the waste that people throw into the streets.

The comments also indicate that the administration should act not only during the rains but also take preventive measures.

"The alert is valid, but we also need to work on eliminating the causes. Among them are the accumulations of waste," clarified a user.

Residents in the area warn about the negative effects of poor urban hygiene and infrequent garbage collection.

According to one of the comments, the accumulation of water and waste could facilitate the entry of water into homes and pose a health risk.

"Before clearing the drains, the trash must be collected, even if it’s with carts, because heavy rains wash away the garbage and it never ends. And we must ensure that people do not enter those waters because it will bring diseases," he said.

Other forum members point out that the situation is structural and requires long-term solutions: "We need to address the sewage issue in that area. Nature has been sending signals for some time now."

The population's concern includes the potential risks of epidemics resulting from the accumulation of water and garbage: "They need to start unclogging the sewers because the next epidemic is going to be the plague," warned a user.

Flooding in low-lying areas of El Vedado highlights a recurring issue in the capital: the combination of rainfall, accumulated waste, and inadequate sewage systems continues to impact the mobility, hygiene, and safety of residents.

While the government issues alerts and recommendations, citizens demand concrete actions that go beyond warnings and address the structural causes of the flooding.
