The former Cuban spy and current national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, promoted on the social media platform X the delivery of a donation of mosquito repellents to the official organization, amidst a severe health and social crisis in Cuba.
According to Hernández, the donation was made by the Serbian company Panagro and delivered by Dragan Kamenica, the representative and manager of the company for Cuba, described as the only firm from that European country with a commercial office on the island.
"A donation of mosquito repellent manufactured by the Serbian company Panagro was delivered to #CDRCuba," it was published.
However, the announcement sparked numerous mocking reactions and criticisms among social media users, who questioned the regime's portrayal of receiving repellent as an achievement in a country affected by outbreaks of dengue, chikungunya, and other mosquito-borne diseases, as well as by chronic shortages of medications and basic supplies.
Several internet users pointed out that the donation is insufficient and symbolic in light of the magnitude of the health issues, while others mocked the role of the CDR as recipients of aid instead of hospitals and vulnerable communities.
The episode highlights the gap between the official discourse and the daily reality of millions of Cubans, in a context marked by blackouts, an economic crisis, and a deterioration of health services.
