The last day of 2025 arrived with unusual cold both in South Florida and in Cuba, following the arrival of a cold front and the advancement of a very cold air mass that caused mornings to have temperatures below the usual for this time of year, according to weather reports cited by local press and the summary of the weather conditions for the island.
In Miami, Miami International Airport (MIA) recorded a low of 47°F (approx. 8°C) at 7:00 a.m. this Wednesday, according to information communicated to the Miami Herald by meteorologist Robert Molleda from the National Weather Service.
Molleda pointed out that it was possible —though not likely— that the temperature had dropped another degree between 7 and 8 in the morning.
The report indicated that minimum temperatures around 4°C were observed in areas of western Miami-Dade such as Homestead, Redland, and West Kendall, while in Miami Beach (a coastal area, usually warmer), values were estimated at 47–48°F.
Molleda confirmed that the temperatures this New Year's Eve were the lowest in South Florida in a quarter of a century, comparing them to December 31, 2000, when MIA recorded 42°F and Fort Lauderdale 40°F.
By midnight, when Miami welcomes 2026, the cited forecast indicated around 10°C in downtown, with values of 7–8°C in the western areas and 11–13°C in South Beach.
Cuba: weakened cold front, but very cold air over the island
In Cuba, the cold front that arrived the previous day was weakened in the east, but the influence of high pressures and a very cold air mass maintained a "mostly cold" outlook across much of the country, with some isolated showers along the northern coast, according to the report included in the document.
During the night and early morning, satellite images showed a wedge of cold, dry air advancing from the Florida peninsula towards Cuba, primarily affecting the provinces from Matanzas to Sancti Spíritus.
According to the expert Raydel Ruisánchez, in weather stations at airports, decreases of up to 12 and 13°C were recorded in those areas, while temperatures in the rest of the territory ranged between 14 and 18°C.
The forecast described anticipated a cold day in the west, cool in the center, and slightly warm in the southeast. It also warned that the perceived temperature would be lower than the measured temperatures, with maximum feels-like temperatures below 20°C in the western region, so a “fairly cold” day was expected.
