The Cuban creator @melissaarmass lit up TikTok with a video that blends pride, personality, and a lot of Cuban flavor. In the clip, recorded in English, she responds to those who claim that “she doesn’t look Cuban” because of her physical appearance. But her response left no room for doubt: “I am Cuban. I speak fluent Spanish. I was raised in a Cuban family, with Cuban parties, Cuban traditions, Cuban culture. I am Cuban, period.”
What caught the most attention came at the end, when he/she dropped the phrase that went viral:
"They can't shame me for something that shaped me and of which I am proud. With your opinion, I wipe my a…”
The networks exploded. Thousands of users applauded his attitude and his very Cuban way of ending the video. "The hand movement said it all, there was no need for subtitles," commented a follower with laughter. Another was more direct: "The chain with your name confirms it, case closed."
Cubans in Miami and other parts of the world quickly joined the debate on identity and race. “I am white, with green eyes, and every time I speak, I'm told I don't look Cuban. Well, look, I am, and I’m proud of it,” wrote one user. Another added: “The problem is that many don’t understand that Cuba is mixed, diverse, that there isn’t just one way to be Cuban.”
There were also messages filled with humor and affection: “From the moment you opened your mouth and moved your hands, it was clear you were Cuban, my dear,” “That last phrase was pure gold,” or “You got me with the ending, that was truly the work of a real Cuban.” Even a user summarized what many were thinking: “I thought you were Russian until you spoke… and said the most Cuban thing I've ever heard in my life.”
The video by @melissaarmass has been shared thousands of times, sparking a debate on how Cuban identity is perceived outside the island. But beyond the controversy, her message is clear: being Cuban has many faces, and pride cannot be concealed.
And as many wrote in the comments, laughing and applauding:
"With that final phrase, it was evident that yes, she is Cuban... and the kind that doesn't back down."
