President Donald Trump described Cuba as a “failed nation” and stated that it is a topic we “will end up talking about”, during a press conference where he responded to a question about whether he had “any message” for the island.
In a press conference, President Donald Trump stated that Cuba will be a topic he will “discuss later” and referred to the Island as a “failed state.”
He maintained that “that system has not been very good for Cuba” and stated that “the people there have suffered for many years.”
In that context, he suggested that Washington wants to “help the people in Cuba” and also “assist the individuals who were forced to leave Cuba and [are] living in this country.”
Immediately afterwards, Trump gave the floor to Secretary of State Marco Rubio to elaborate on the topic.
Rubio stated that the president's statements must be taken "seriously" and launched a wave of criticism against the Cuban government: "Cuba is a disaster... They have no economy, it is in total collapse," he said.
Rubio also linked Cuba to the protection of Nicolás Maduro.
He pointed out that "all the guards who help protect Maduro... and his entire espionage agency... were filled with Cubans."
He added that, from his perspective, one of the problems for Venezuelans is that “they have to declare Cuba’s independence,” asserting that “basically they tried to colonize it.”
In his closing remarks on that point, Rubio warned: “If I lived in Havana and were in the government, I would be at least a little worried.”
