Maduro will make a stop at the Guantanamo base before being taken to New York

According to CNN, the stopover is part of a logistical consideration to expedite the transfer. By boarding it in Guantánamo, officials could take it directly to New York instead of having to present it first before another court.

Nicolás Maduro, who is aboard the USS Iwo Jima heading to New York, will make a brief stop at the U.S. military base in Guantánamo Bay before being transferred to that city.

According to two sources familiar with the plans cited by the network CNN, the stop is part of a logistical consideration to expedite the transfer.

Upon boarding in Guantánamo, officials could take him directly to New York instead of having to present him first to another court.

The report specifies that the base —also known as "Gitmo"— is located in the southeast of Cuba, on the coast of Guantánamo Bay.

CNN does not provide specific details in the text regarding the exact time of the stopover or the duration of Maduro's stay at the facility, attributing the information solely to the two sources cited as knowledgeable about the transfer plans.

The president Donald Trump stated this Saturday that Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, "are headed to New York" to face a proceeding in a federal court.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump stated that both “were charged in New York” and that they are already being transferred to U.S. soil aboard the USS Iwo Jima, a multipurpose amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy.

According to Trump in a press conference from the White House, both were first taken to a U.S. military platform.

"They were transferred to the assault ship U.S.S. Iwo Jima and will then 'head to New York... by helicopter,'" it notes, without specifying what the dictator's final destination will be.

This morning, Trump also published the first photograph of Maduro following his capture, which—according to the president himself—shows him aboard the U.S. military ship USS Iwo Jima.

The image was shared on Truth Social, where Trump stated that the Venezuelan leader was being transported on that ship "to face charges."
