President Donald Trump asserted this Saturday that he is "not happy" with Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of "killing too many people," in remarks made at the conclusion of a press conference in Mar-a-Lago, in the context of the military attack on the regime of Nicolás Maduro.
Trump asserted that during the phone conversation with the Russian leader, they “never” discussed Venezuela or Nicolás Maduro.
“No, we didn’t. We never talked about Maduro,” he replied when asked if they had addressed the topic, before insisting on his frustration with Putin over the war.
The president stated that he hoped the conflict between Russia and Ukraine would be "one of the easiest" to resolve, but said that "it is not" and that "both have done some quite bad things."
At that point, he emphasized that the war “is Biden's war,” not his own, although he stated that he wants to “stop the lives” that are being lost.
As part of his arguments, Trump cited figures of monthly casualties that he primarily attributed to soldiers and spoke of 25,000 to 30,000 deaths per month.
“Last month 30,000… this last one was 27,000… the month before 30,000… mostly soldiers,” he said, adding that, in addition, “people are being killed” in Kyiv and in other cities.
In the same exchange, Trump claimed that he managed to get NATO countries to pay "5% instead of 2%" and noted that "ammunitions," "missiles," and other supplies have been sent, asserting that "the United States is not losing money" and even that it is "probably" "making money," although he emphasized that that is "the last" thing he cares about in light of the goal of stopping the war.
Trump described the war as a “bloodbath” and reiterated that it “should never have happened,” insisting that if he had been president, it would not have occurred.
He said he "inherited" the conflict and described it as "a disaster," while noting that he believes they are "making progress."
Before concluding, the president compared what he considered the prolongation of the conflict to the "precision" of a military operation that took place the previous night in Caracas and stated that, with "our people" involved, that war "would not have lasted long."
