U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Cubans died while trying to protect Nicolás Maduro during the U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of the Venezuelan leader and his wife, Cilia Flores.
“Did you know that many Cubans lost their lives last night? Many Cubans lost their lives. They were protecting Maduro. That was not a good decision,” Trump said in an interview with The New York Post, although he acknowledged that he does not know the exact number of fatalities, nor specified whether they were military personnel, advisors, or security staff sent from Cuba.
The statements came after the surprise military operation carried out in the early hours by the United States in Venezuela, involving more than 150 aircraft, which left Caracas without electricity and ended with the arrest of Maduro, who now faces federal charges for drug trafficking on U.S. territory. Trump assured that there were no American casualties, although one of the planes was damaged.
In the same interview, Trump directly linked Cuba to the support of the Venezuelan regime. "Cuba has always depended heavily on Venezuela. They drew their money from there and protected Venezuela, but that didn’t work out very well in this case," he stated, reinforcing the narrative of a strategic alliance that would have fatal consequences for Cuban citizens.
The president's words revive a recurring concern among many Cuban families regarding the deployment of personnel on high-risk international missions, without clear information, without official transparency, and, in many cases, without the option to refuse.
So far, the Cuban government has neither confirmed nor denied Trump's claims regarding victims from the Island.
Trump also ruled out direct military action against Cuba, although he issued a veiled warning. "Cuba is going to fall on its own. Cuba is doing very poorly."
Shortly before, Secretary of State Marco Rubio had stated that, if he were in the Cuban government, “he would be at least a little concerned”, referring to the new regional scenario following Maduro's downfall.
Meanwhile, Venezuela enters a stage of political uncertainty and international tension, and Trump's statements place Cuba at the center of the debate, not only as an ally of Chavismo but as a country whose citizens, according to the Republican, have paid with their lives for a political decision made far from them.
