Villa Clara closed October 2025 with an alarming balance of traffic accidents: 511 recorded incidents, 48 fatalities, and 629 injuries, according to official data that shows an increase compared to the previous year.
The report was presented by Lieutenant Colonel Heriberto López Pérez de Prado, head of the Provincial Transit Unit, in statements to the Cuban News Agency (ACN), who detailed that the figures surpass those of the same period in 2024, with 50 more accidents.
The main causes of these accidents, the official specified, are distractions while driving, disrespect for right of way, pedestrian violations, and irresponsible consumption of alcoholic beverages.
It also noted the existence of nine highly dangerous sections that account for more than a hundred incidents, with nearly ten fatalities and close to 200 injured.
Motorcycles top the statistics of involved vehicles, as they are implicated in almost half of the accidents.
In response, the authorities issued more than 40,000 fines, sanctioned 717 repeat offenders, and permanently revoked 53 driver's licenses.
During the most recent national traffic campaign, held under the slogan "Yield to the road," educational and preventive actions were promoted, as well as recognition for drivers with exemplary records, reported López Pérez.
However, other factors complicate the traffic situation. Juan Carlos Riol, the transport delegate in the province, acknowledged the presence of drivers over 65 years of age without medical check-ups, drivers lacking requalification, and the continued presence of loose animals on the roads, which increases the risk of accidents.
Marcos Banguela Villaureta, a professional driver in Santa Clara, stated that the poor condition of the roads, combined with the recklessness of motorcyclists riding without helmets and at high speeds, contributes to the increase in accidents.
In light of this situation, Pedro Julio González León, the provincial director of Roadways, announced that work on the road network will commence at the end of this month in the municipality of Santo Domingo, once the allocated funds are received. Access to Santa Clara, the National Highway, and the tourist and mountainous routes will be prioritized.
For his part, José Antonio Valeriano Fariñas, director of the Construction and Engineering Company in Villa Clara, stated that the entity has two asphalt plants capable of producing more than 40 thousand tons of mix to meet the provincial demand and part of the central region of the country.
Although local authorities emphasize maintenance efforts and prevention campaigns, data confirms a steady decline in road safety in Villa Clara, where each year the roads claim dozens of lives, reflecting a lack of infrastructure and control in the context of a national crisis, highlighted ACN.
In this regard, this Sunday three people were injured, one of whom is in serious condition, following an accident that occurred on the road segment known as La Arenera, between the towns of La Campana and Hanabanilla, in the municipality of Manicaragua, Villa Clara province.
