The former Cuban marine Willie Suárez, creator of the channel BoxeoCubano and promoter of Cuban boxing in the United States, expressed on social media his opposition to a possible military intervention on the island, although he stated that he would prefer "a few minutes of invasion" rather than "60 more years of suffering" under the communist regime.
In a post on their Facebook page, Suárez wrote: “I would never want to see my Marine brothers land in Cuba for war; I simply wouldn’t like to see it because as a Marine, I know from personal experience how lethal they can be.”
He added that he does not like “seeing the police oppressing Cubans,” something that—according to him—happens every day, nor does he enjoy “watching a poor and rotting Cuba under the boot of tyrants.” “So if I have to choose between a few minutes of invasion or another 60 years of martyrdom, I tell my marines, as Salas used to say to Gamboa: ‘Unleash the dogs!’”, he expressed.
The former military member clarified that his greatest wish is for the island's freedom to come from the Cubans themselves and not be "a foreign gift." "I hope that freedom comes from the hands of Cubans and is not a foreign gift, because that freedom will not last long," he stated.
Suárez, who has gained notoriety for his work in promoting Cuban boxing through his channel and social media, is also a cancer survivor, a battle he publicly shared in 2020 when he completed his chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.
At that time, he declared on his page that he had completed an "aggressive" medical process and expressed his gratitude for the support he received: "There were many more times I wanted to throw in the towel. But when you are surrounded by so many good people who care about you, it's impossible to do that," he said then.
Following its recent publication, Suárez's message sparked extensive debate among supporters and detractors on Facebook. Some users agreed that "freedom is priceless" and supported his critical stance against the Cuban regime, while others rejected any possibility of military intervention and advocated for change "through peaceful means."
Amid the comments, Suárez reiterated that he does not support the economic embargo of the United States and responded to those who criticized him, stating: “Personally, I have never supported the embargo, but for very capitalist reasons on my part. Now, if they wanted to do business with the United States, they should never have begged for their properties.”
