Rise in the value of a currency in Cuba: Upward trend of foreign exchange on the island confirmed

At dawn on this Wednesday, January 14, the informal currency market in Cuba shows a price increase of the euro for the second consecutive day.

At 7:00 a.m. (local time), the European currency is selling for an average of 510 CUP, which represents an increase of five units compared to the value reached by the euro on the previous day.

In the case of the dollar, it holds at 470 CUP in the informal exchange rate of the island, which it reached on Tuesday, according to the rate published this Wednesday by the independent outlet elTOQUE.   

Regarding the evolution of the value of the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), it remains stable at 400 CUP since last Friday.

In general, the dollar and the euro have been on an upward trend since the beginning of 2026, a period that coincides with the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela on January 3rd, an event that has caused political tension and economic instability throughout the region, with particular attention on Cuba.
