The informal currency market in Cuba starts this January 7 with two news items: the price of the dollar and the euro has gone up.
For the fourth consecutive day, the US dollar strengthens its upward trend.
In recent hours, the dollar rose to 450 CUP in the informal exchange rate in Cuba, according to the rate published by the independent media elTOQUE. The figure represents two pesos more than its value on the previous day.
The increase confirms the upward trend that began after the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, an event that has generated political tension and economic instability throughout the region, which has directly impacted the exchange rates of currencies on the island.
Exchange Rate Evolution
In the case of the euro, the European currency suddenly rises by five pesos, reaching 490 CUP.
With the informal market rate this Wednesday, the Cuban peso is sinking a bit more against foreign currencies, at the beginning of a year marked by uncertainty and the loss of purchasing power.
The increase in the value of dollars and euros reflects the growing mistrust in the Cuban peso (CUP) and citizens' search for refuge in strong currencies amid economic and political uncertainty.
On social media, several users have linked the rise of the greenback to regional nervousness following events in Caracas and the possibility of a readjustment in bilateral relations between Havana and its energy ally, one of the major oil suppliers to the regime.
The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), for its part, remains stable, valued at 400 CUP.
