The informal currency market in Cuba starts this January 9 with two important updates: the price of the dollar and the euro has increased.
In the last few hours, the dollar has risen to 453 CUP in the informal exchange rate in Cuba, according to the rate published by the independent elTOQUE. This figure represents an increase of two pesos compared to its value from the previous day.
The increase confirms the upward trend that began following the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, an event that has generated political tension and economic instability throughout the region, and that has directly impacted the exchange rates of currencies on the island.
In the case of the euro, the European currency rises suddenly by five pesos and stands at 495 CUP.
Exchange Rate Evolution
The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), on the other hand, experiences a sharp decline and drops to 400 CUP, which means eight pesos less than its average selling price on Thursday.
With the informal market rate this Friday, the Cuban peso has plunged even further against foreign currencies, at the start of a year marked by uncertainty and a loss of purchasing power on the island.
The increase in the value of dollars and euros reflects the growing distrust in the Cuban peso (CUP) and the search for refuge in strong currencies by citizens, amidst the economic and political uncertainty looming over the country.
