The informal currency market in Cuba starts this January 8 with a new development: a spike in the selling price of the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC).
In recent hours, the virtual currency used by the Cuban regime rose from 400 to 408 CUP, according to the rate published by the independent media elTOQUE.
The figure represents an increase of eight pesos compared to its previous value.
The dollar and the euro, for their part, maintain the values reached on Wednesday: the U.S. currency is sold at 450 CUP and the European currency at 490 CUP.
Exchange Rate Evolution
The increase confirms the upward trend of foreign currencies in Cuba, which began following the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, an event that has generated political tension and economic instability throughout the region, and that has directly impacted the exchange rates of currencies on the island.
With the informal market quote from this Wednesday, the Cuban peso falls a bit more against foreign currencies, in a new year marked by uncertainty and a loss of purchasing power.
