A young Spanish woman has gone viral on TikTok after announcing that in a month she will travel to Cuba for a volunteer program. In her video, posted under the username @lauramonntana, she explains that she chose the island "on a whim" and that gradually she has fallen in love with its history, culture, and, above all, its people.
“I'm leaving at the historical moment when the country is at its best,” she said sarcastically, apparently referring to the deep economic crisis that Cuba is experiencing. The young woman claimed that it would be her first trip alone and that she was looking for a destination rich in history and culture, but also a place where she could learn and connect with the local population.
The volunteer program, as he explained, will consist of a cultural exchange experience at a Cuban hostel. In exchange for accommodation and meals, he will assist with the daily tasks of the place. “I will have to pay a symbolic amount because they provide me with food, but it seems reasonable given the economic situation in the country and the almost nonexistent resources they have,” he remarked.
Although she acknowledges that one should take precautions, the young woman does not consider Cuba to be a dangerous country. “It is not particularly known for its danger, although some people might think otherwise,” she stated. Additionally, she expressed her attraction to Latin America and had been dreaming for months of swimming in a Caribbean beach.
Before traveling, he has taken time to learn about the history of Cuba and confesses that there is no other place in the world he wishes to visit more. “I hope the situation doesn't worsen before I go. It’s going to be a life-changing experience for me,” he stated. The comments on the video have been disabled, possibly to avoid controversy over his decision to travel to the island at this particularly sensitive time.
