The Cuban pitcher Yunesky Maya was declared the Adopted Son of the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, in the Dominican Republic, in recognition of his sports career, perseverance, discipline, and commitment to the Águilas Cibaeñas, one of the most iconic franchises in Dominican baseball.
According to journalist Francys Romero on the social network Facebook, Maya, the current bullpen coach for the Aguiluchos team, left a lasting impact during his seven seasons as a pitcher with the team, a period in which he won the Pitcher of the Year award and played a crucial role in two championships, earning the respect of both fans and the organization.
During the official ceremony, Santiago's mayor, Ulises Rodríguez, emphasized the special bond between the Cuban baseball player and the city: “Today Santiago experiences a moment of profound pride in recognizing a man who defended our colors with passion and character. Yunesky Maya understood what it means to play in this city, where talent alone is not enough, but total commitment is required. Therefore, today we declare him an Adoptive Son of Santiago, formalizing what we have felt in our hearts for a long time.”
The recognition symbolizes not only Maya's sports achievements but also her full integration into the sports and social life of Santiago, a city that embraced her as one of its own and where she continues to contribute her experience from the coaching staff of the Águilas Cibaeñas.
For Maya, this appointment represents the confirmation of a relationship built on hard work, respect, and results, and it solidifies her legacy within Dominican baseball beyond the pitcher's mound.
