A spill of liquid soap that occurred on the afternoon of January 21, 2026, at the intersection of Calvario and Avenida Martí in Santiago de Cuba, necessitated a swift intervention by the Fire Department to eliminate the hazard and prevent potential accidents in one of the busiest areas of the eastern city.
The information was shared on Facebook by Aris Arias Batalla, provincial vice president of the Volunteer Firefighters Association of Cuba, who emphasized the professionalism and promptness with which the forces of Command 1 "Martí" responded to the emergency.
According to the specialist's report, a state truck transporting liquid soap tanks lost part of its load when it braked abruptly, causing the product to spill onto the road and leaving the pavement extremely slippery.
The firefighters acted immediately to clear the area and restore road safety, preventing the incident from leading to an accident with injuries.
An event that recalls another occurrence in Havana
The incident in Santiago de Cuba recalls a similar episode in 2020 in Old Havana, when a truck spilled liquid detergent near Obispo Street.
On that occasion, dozens of neighbors came out with buckets and jars to collect the spilled product, leaving images that reflected the desperation of Cubans in the face of the scarcity of basic cleaning supplies.
Unlike that incident, the one in Santiago was swiftly managed by the authorities, without major incidents or scenes of panic buying.
However, both cases highlight the precarious conditions of transportation and handling of chemical products in the country, as well as the everyday vulnerability of the population to any incident.
The Fire Department confirmed that the situation was resolved without any reports of injuries or material damage, and that traffic in the area was restored shortly after their intervention.
