Cuban authorities reported the detection of a new international drug trafficking operation at José Martí International Airport, where several packages of marijuana were found hidden inside food products.
The General Customs of the Republic of Cuba confirmed that the shipment was concealed among boxes of cereal and other food items, as stated on social media by the first deputy chief of the institution, Wiliam Pérez González.
In his account on X, the official explained that the detection of the illegal shipment was the result of joint work between Customs and the Anti-Drug Agency of the Ministry of the Interior.
"The marijuana was concealed in a package of cereal and food. The unity between Customs in Cuba and the Anti-Drug Agency is our greatest strength, coupled with the preparation and rigor in this fight," he stated.
The institution also confirmed the discovery on its official Facebook profile, where it described it as part of the prevention and combat actions against drug trafficking at international entry points.
Although the authorities did not provide details about the origin or destination of the drug, nor specified whether there are any arrests, the official statement indicates that it was an international trafficking operation.
Additionally, among the images, products such as instant drinks from the Zuko brand and flour for making hotcakes or pancakes are identified, both marketed in Mexico, which suggests that they arrived in Cuba on a flight from that country.
Additionally, one of the images shows a luggage tag with the first letters of "México," which reinforces the idea that the person or people involved arrived from that country.
The Havana airport, the main entry point to the country, has been a frequent site of similar seizures in recent years.
The new operation is announced amidst a context marked by the economic crisis and the deterioration of institutional controls, which have led to an increase in smuggling and the illegal market.
This detection occurs just a few days after the regime reported a drug trafficking operation detected by the Cuban Customs on a flight from Panama that arrived at Havana airport.
In the luggage, nearly 1 kilogram of cocaine was found hidden and mixed inside jars of creams, along with other products such as coffee and food.
