The Cuban reggaeton artist El Chulo, detained at the U.S. immigration center Alligator Alcatraz, broke his silence to firmly deny any connection to the criminal gang Latin Kings.
"I don’t know what that is (Latin Kings band). Everything I have done in my life is music", said the reggaeton artist in a telephone conversation with journalist Maylin Legañoa.
Furthermore, El Chulo assured that he has not been in contact with any member of that criminal organization. “Never in my life,” he insisted.
However, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) maintains allegations of an alleged connection to the gang and classified the reggaeton artist as a "dangerous criminal" in the United States.
The artist, whose real name is Abel Díaz Rodríguez, claims he is innocent and explained that during his 2017 court proceedings, he never had contact with members of that gang. He also clarified that he was detained for almost a year, but was never sent to prison.
El Chulo described the harsh conditions faced in the immigration detention center. He explained that the immigrants held there are only allowed to shower twice a week and can hardly sleep due to the lighting that authorities keep on at all times.
"I think this is the worst I've ever been through in my life", he commented.
The reggaeton artist was arrested on January 22 and remains in the custody of ICE while awaiting a final decision regarding his immigration status or possible deportation.
