A new cold front will arrive in Cuba on the afternoon of this Sunday, January 18, starting in the western region, and it may be accompanied by showers, rain, and isolated thunderstorms in the western and central parts of the country, with the possibility of some precipitation being heavy.
According to reported by the Weather Forecast Center of INSMET, before the arrival of the frontal system, an increase in humidity at various levels of the troposphere is expected, which will promote cloudiness and rainfall events in those regions.
After the passage of the front, INSMET anticipated the return of winter conditions for the beginning of next week, although it has not yet specified concrete temperature values associated with the event.
"Another cold front is moving through the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon in western Cuba. Before its arrival, an increase in relative humidity at various levels of the troposphere is anticipated, which will lead to cloudy conditions accompanied by showers, rain, and isolated thunderstorms in the western and central parts of the country," noted meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez.
Following the passage of the front, winter conditions are once again expected for the beginning of next week.
In its forecast for this Saturday, January 17 (issued at 3:00 a.m.), the Forecast Center indicated that the day would be cloudy in the central and eastern regions, with a possibility of showers and rain in the afternoon, while the west would have a predominance of partly cloudy skies with scarce rainfall.
For this day, the maximum temperatures were estimated to be between 25 and 28°C in the west and center, and up to 30°C in the east, with nighttime minimums ranging from 17 to 20°C.
Not only Cuba is facing winter conditions, as southern Florida woke up this Friday under the influence of the coldest air that has reached the region in almost four years.
Authorities issued a cold weather alert for the interior of Broward and Miami-Dade counties until 9:00 AM, as thermometers recorded minimum temperatures in the 40 degrees Fahrenheit range, with wind chill factors dropping to as low as 30 degrees in some areas.
