Miami-Dade County issued an alert this Saturday about the risks associated with the expected cold and dry weather for this weekend and urged residents to prepare for a significant drop in temperatures in South Florida.
In a message posted on X, Miami-Dade Emergency Management reminded residents that low temperatures can cause injuries, property damage, and expensive repairs. They urged residents to review official recommendations in advance to protect people, pets, plants, and homes before the next cold snaps.
The warning comes as the winter storm Gianna continues to impact the region. Miami International Airport reported flight delays and cancellations and advised passengers to check the status of their itineraries directly with the airlines before heading to the terminal.
The airport also requested employees and travelers to leave early and dress appropriately for warmth in light of the record temperatures announced.
According to forecasts, South Florida, including Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, could experience the lowest temperatures in over ten years this weekend, with Sunday morning expected to be the coldest period.
The lows would be in the mid-30s °F, with a wind chill that could drop to 20 °F (-6 °C).
The National Weather Service issued a frost watch for parts of the region, a condition that could last until Monday.
In light of this situation, authorities and fire departments emphasized the importance of taking extra precautions at home, especially due to the increased use of heating equipment, and paying attention to vulnerable individuals, as well as protecting pets and plants from the severe cold.
In parallel, the counties have activated or are assessing the establishment of temporary shelters for homeless individuals, while local authorities urge the public to stay informed and follow official guidelines during the unusual weather event.
