A very cold air mass of Arctic origin began to enter Cuban territory this Sunday, February 1, according to the Institute of Meteorology of the Republic of Cuba.
The station CMHW La Reina Radial del Centro reported that this phenomenon will cause a significant drop in temperatures across much of the country until Wednesday, February 4, with thermal sensations that could be dangerous for people who are not properly bundled up or who are exposed to the cold air for extended periods.
Most notable records of cold in the meteorological history of Cuba
Among the coldest records in the country, the national record of 0.6 °C at the Bainoa station in Mayabeque province, reached on February 18, 1996, stands out. To date, it is the only official value below 1 °C in Cuba.
Other historical values include the 1.0 °C recorded in Unión de Reyes, Matanzas, during the so-called “Great Cold” of January 1971, and the 1.5 °C measured in Indio Hatuey, Matanzas, on January 16, 2023, when frost was reported in the protected area of Pico San Juan, Cienfuegos.
Similarly, the Güira de Melena station in Artemisa recorded 1.8 °C on February 11, 1917, an event known as "the cold of the century" in the western region, while in 2022, Indio Hatuey reported 2.0 °C again, with frost observed in inland areas of western Cuba.
Meteorological authorities warned that current conditions could lead to very low values, although it remains to be seen whether the cold wave in early February 2026 will be among the most remembered events in the country's climatic history.
The data comes from the network of meteorological stations of the Institute of Meteorology of the Republic of Cuba.
