The administration of President Donald Trump warned the Cuban government on Wednesday that it must undertake "dramatic changes very soon," amid the worsening economic crisis affecting the island.
According to the agency EFE, the White House spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, stated that Washington aims to see prosperous democracies in the hemisphere.
"As Secretary Rubio has expressed, and the President himself, we obviously want to see thriving and prosperous democracies all over the world, especially in our own hemisphere," he noted.
He added that it is in the interest of the United States for Cuba to be “a truly free and prosperous democracy,” something that, he acknowledged, “unfortunately is not the case right now.”
Leavitt also stated that the Cuban regime is going through a phase of accelerated deterioration.
"They are a regime that is collapsing, their country is falling apart, and that is why we believe it is in their best interest to make very dramatic changes very soon, and we will see what they decide to do," he stated.
The warning comes in a context of increasing pressure from Washington on Havana, with measures aimed at forcing political and economic transformations on the island.
Similarly, President Donald Trump stated this Monday that Cuba faces a “humanitarian threat” and argued that the island's government should reach an agreement with the United States amid the severe energy crisis it is experiencing.
During a press briefing aboard Air Force One heading to Joint Base Andrews, Trump claimed that currently conversations with Havana are ongoing.
"Cuba is currently a failed nation, and they don't even have fuel for the planes to take off," the leader stated.
He added that "they absolutely should reach an agreement because it is a humanitarian threat."
