The organization Bienestar Animal Cuba (BAC) reported a situation of abandonment and hunger at the Puerto Padre zoo, in the province of Las Tunas, and raised concerns about the worsening conditions of several animals.
In a post shared on social media, BAC outlined a critical situation within the facility.
According to the organization, the lions show visible signs of malnutrition and remain on concrete surfaces, with limited access to water in inadequate conditions.
It also noted that birds and primates would show signs of weakness and lack of nutrition.
"The silence is heavy," stated the group in their message, where they asserted that animals "do not ask for luxury, they ask for food," and urged for urgent attention to the situation.
The statement emphasizes that the current conditions do not meet minimum animal welfare standards and called for not ignoring what they describe as prolonged suffering.
So far, local authorities have not issued a public statement in response to the allegations.
The situation once again highlights the conditions of various zoos in the country, which are struggling with food shortages, resources, and maintenance amid the ongoing economic crisis in Cuba.
Despite the alarming situation of the animals at the Las Tunas zoo, it is not new.
In 2020, Cuban animal rights activists reported the deplorable conditions of starvation that the lions at the zoo in the city of Puerto Padre, in the province of Las Tunas, are subjected to.
