The opposition activist Amelia Calzadilla requested assistance for her nonagenarian grandmother in Cuba.
“I need urgent help. My 95-year-old grandmother is developing bedsores due to immobility. I need an anti-bed sore mattress from someone who has one in Havana, I am willing to pay for it. Please message me privately,” wrote the activist residing in Madrid on Facebook.
Two hours after the assistance request was posted, Calzadilla was able to get a mattress for his grandmother.
"To everyone!!! Thank you, we already have the mattress. A thousand thanks for your help. I will update you on how things progress. That little old lady is holding on to get us back together; she knows it's not long until we are reunited," she said in a comment on her initial post.
The economic crisis is hitting Cuba and especially hard on the elderly. Pensions, eroded by inflation and shortages, barely cover the essentials, while prices for food and basic products continue to soar. For many senior citizens, relying on remittances or informal assistance has become the only alternative.
