Pablo Vega, known to everyone as "Pablito," left his home at four in the morning to queue at the bank. It was his only option to collect a pension of 2,800 Cuban pesos, barely enough to cover his medications and some food. Hours later, he returned battered. He did not survive.
The elderly man, a worker in Acopio for more than 30 years, had lost his sight due to diabetes. Nevertheless, he continued to face daily challenges with dignity. He lived alone, although his brothers and family closely supported him and did not leave him without assistance.
According to the report published on social media by Kiryat Poey, last Friday, while he was waiting for his turn to pay, several young people saw him in line. Instead of respecting his status as a blind and elderly man, they brutally assaulted him and stole the little money he had.
Pablo managed to return home alive, located in the Caridad area between Princesa and Aranguren in Cárdenas. His sisters immediately took him to the doctor. However, he subsequently passed away due to the injuries sustained.
Indignation has quickly spread among neighbors and social media users. Dozens of comments express pain, rage, and a profound sense of insecurity. “It’s no longer safe to go out,” “the elderly are unprotected,” “violence is out of control,” many repeat.
Family members also confirmed that, after his death, the body remained in the home for more than five hours waiting for the funeral service, as they were told there was no way to transport the body, which further increased the distress among friends and acquaintances.
In Cárdenas, fear and frustration are growing in response to what many describe as an increase in violence against vulnerable individuals.
So far, there has been no official announcement regarding the arrest of the alleged perpetrators.
Meanwhile, neighbors and family mourn a humble man who woke up early to collect his pension and ended up paying with his life.
