Cubans in exile and networks of activists have called for an international day of demonstrations on February 28th to demand freedom for Cuba and to denounce the persistence of the political system that has governed the island for over six decades.
The information was released by the news site Click Cuba, which detailed that the protests will take place simultaneously in cities across Europe, North America, and Latin America, as part of a coordinated effort to highlight the political, economic, and social crisis facing the country.
According to the summary of calls released by the organizers, there will be gatherings in Spain in Málaga, Madrid, Alicante, Barcelona, and Bilbao. Protests are also planned in Stockholm, Sweden; Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal in Canada; Montevideo, Uruguay; and Brasília, Brazil.
In several European cities, demonstrations will take place in central squares and iconic locations, aiming to achieve greater public visibility. In America, the actions seek to broaden the reach of the demand and strengthen international pressure.
The event also serves as a support for external pressure policies against the Cuban regime and as a way to denounce the situation of political prisoners and the lack of fundamental freedoms on the island.
The organizers called not only on the Cuban community but also on citizens from other nationalities who wish to show solidarity with the democratic cause and human rights in Cuba, describing it as a coordinated demonstration of international civic pressure.
About this initiative, the Cuban-Basque Association Demokrazia kubarentzat emphasized that the event is taking place because "Cuba is going through one of the most critical stages in its recent history. Repression against those who think differently continues, political prisoners remain deprived of their freedom for demanding basic rights, and the population is facing a deep crisis marked by scarcity."
In their statement, they also said: "We are not facing a mere economic difficulty, but a structural reality where essential civil and political rights are denied."
