The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated that his government will independently verify what happened this Wednesday during the armed confrontation in Cuban waters that resulted in four fatalities aboard a vessel registered in Florida.

In statements made this Wednesday and reported by Telemundo, Rubio stated: “We are going to verify this independently to know exactly what happened here,” referring to the incident that occurred near the province of Villa Clara.

The head of U.S. diplomacy noted that Cuban authorities have been in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard, but warned that "the initial reports are incomplete."

He added that Washington will utilize the existing official channels between both countries, including the embassy in Havana, to accurately determine what happened.

Rubio stated that U.S. authorities are attempting to verify the information provided by the Cuban government regarding the exchange of gunfire that, according to the island's Ministry of the Interior, occurred after the boat registered in Florida entered territorial waters and opened fire on a Border Guard unit.

During the same appearance, the Secretary of State was asked about the sale of oil to Cuba.

Rubio stated that the private sector has always had the legal ability to sell crude oil to the island and argued that the current crisis is due to the Cuban regime "following an economic model that does not exist or function anywhere in the world."

The incident is still under review by U.S. authorities as more details are awaited regarding the identity of the victims and the exact circumstances of the confrontation.

The Vice President of the United States, JD Vance, stated on Wednesday that the U.S. government is monitoring a situation that occurred in Cuba, but emphasized that they do not yet have enough details.

"Certainly, it is a situation we are monitoring; hopefully, it is not as serious as we fear. But I cannot say more because I simply don't know any more," he stated when asked about the matter.
