The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated that Cuba can only have a better future if it adopts an economic model different from the current one, which he described as nonexistent and nonfunctional.

During statements made this Wednesday, Rubio stated that the serious situation the island is experiencing is directly related to its economic system.

"The reason things are so bad is that they have an economic model that doesn't exist, that doesn't work. It doesn't exist anywhere in the world. It is not functional," he expressed.

The head of U.S. diplomacy added that "the only way Cuba will have a better future is if it has a different economic model," emphasizing that the current system does not generate prosperity or stability.

Rubio also referred to the program of Cuban medical missions abroad, which he characterized as a form of labor exploitation.

He pointed out that doctors receive a minimal fraction of the money that recipient countries pay, and that the rest is retained by the Cuban government.

"The fact that these people are working in that way is essentially human trafficking. They are barely paid, and their freedom of movement is strictly restricted," he stated.

According to the Secretary of State, Washington wants governments that contract these services to understand that payments are made to the regime and not directly to the healthcare professionals.

The statements come amid increasing pressure from President Donald Trump's administration on Havana, amid the energy and economic crisis facing the island.

The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, also stated this Wednesday that his government will independently verify what happened in the armed confrontation in Cuban waters that left four dead aboard a vessel registered in Florida.

Rubio stated: “We will independently verify this to understand what exactly happened here,” referring to the incident that occurred near the province of Villa Clara.
