Jorge Luis Ortiz Quiala is a 35-year-old Cuban military officer who has been sent to the military prison of El Globo, located in the community of Las Guásimas in Arroyo Naranjo, without his family having received any official information regarding the charges against him. According to sources close to the detained individual who reported to CiberCuba, the Prosecutor's Office states that it will provide the case file within a maximum of 90 days while he is in prison.
Ortiz Quiala, a graduate academy official with more than a decade of service in the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), had been requesting an exit from active service for about three years. According to the sources consulted, he had already fulfilled the minimum time required to apply for the corresponding leave, but his request was repeatedly postponed.
At the end of last year, Jorge Luis Ortiz Quiala had an "embarrassing" situation with his direct superior, described by those around him as a controversial figure within the unit. Following that incident, he was brought before the military prosecutor's office.
Subsequently, he stopped showing up at the unit for several days. In the midst of their search, the authorities mistakenly detained a relative, believing he was the sought-after military personnel. The misunderstanding was clarified, and the officer was arrested for ten days in his military unit.
After that period, he returned with his family (he is married to a doctor and has a 14-year-old daughter) and continued working as usual. At the beginning of this year, according to sources, he was informed that he would be demoted and transferred to another unit as a disciplinary measure.
Shortly thereafter, he was summoned to the regional military prosecutor's office in Artemisa, located in the municipality of Bauta. He appeared without knowing the formal reason for the summons, and hours later informed his acquaintances that he would be sent directly to prison.
"They sent him to prison as another precautionary measure. We do not know the reason, we do not know what charge they are accusing him of, and we do not know for how long," indicated sources close to the detainee.
People in his environment claim to have contacted military leaders and the regional Prosecutor's Office without receiving a clear explanation regarding the charges or the duration of the measure taken.
So far, the authorities have not provided public information about the case nor have they officially confirmed the reasons for the imprisonment.
