The Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel oversaw military exercises this weekend in the Northern Zone of San José de Las Lajas, one of the main access points to Havana and the province of Mayabeque.
The Western Army reported on social media that the visit took place during the national day dedicated to combat preparation for February, in a context where the regime has declared 2026 as the “Year of Defense” and conducts training every weekend.
Díaz-Canel witnessed the preparation of the Brigades to "face and defeat the aggressor." The images astonish internet users as they display old and very precarious military equipment.
He was accompanied by the Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, Army Corps General Álvaro López Miera; the Chief of the Western Army, Division General Ernest Feijóo Eiró, and provincial authorities.
The maneuvers occur amid rising tensions with the United States.
This Friday, President Donald Trump stated that his administration will begin a "friendly and controlled takeover" of Cuba and described the island as "a failed nation."
Additionally, Trump asserted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is maintaining high-level contacts with Havana following a recent armed incident in waters near the country.
