The Cuban Robert Kelbert, who emigrated to the United States as a child, was recently honored as a "Model Latino" on the program Desiguales, broadcast by Univision, in a tribute that highlighted his story of hard work, perseverance, and commitment to education and the Latin community.
Born in Guanabacoa, Havana, Kelbert left Cuba with his family when he was just seven years old. Like many immigrants, his journey in the United States was characterized by sacrifices and hard work from a young age.
At 17, he began working as a dishwasher and waiter while trying to find his way in the American education system. During the day, he worked, and at night, he studied, following the advice of his parents, who always instilled in him the importance of academic preparation.
Her journey, however, was not without obstacles. Several universities in the United States rejected her application for admission, partly due to her limited financial situation and the lack of social support that many students have when aspiring to higher education institutions.
Each refusal represented a personal challenge, but it also strengthened her determination not to allow those barriers to define her future.
He finally managed to access studies thanks to a partial scholarship that allowed him to begin his professional training. He first trained as a realtor and later continued his academic journey to become a lawyer.
Over the years, that personal experience evolved into a greater purpose. Kelbert founded Kelbert University, where he currently serves as dean, and from which he promotes access to education for students who, like him at one time, face economic or social barriers.
Their educational philosophy is based on a clear conviction: a person's talent and potential do not always manifest in statistics or standardized tests.
During their participation in Desiguales, the hosts of the program highlighted their journey as an example of leadership and perseverance within the Latino community.
In addition to his educational work, Kelbert maintains a strong social commitment. He is currently collaborating with TeletonUSA, supporting initiatives aimed at helping children with disabilities and their families in the United States and Latin America.
The recognition as "Exemplary Latino" not only celebrates his professional success but also a story of resilience that began from humble beginnings and today inspires new generations of Latino immigrants to pursue their goals.
