After intense efforts, the ambassador of Panama in Cuba, Edwin Pitty, managed to meet this Friday with the 10 Panamanian citizens detained on the island after being accused of carrying out actions deemed subversive by Cuban authorities.

According to the Panamanian outlet La Estrella, the meeting took place at the Villa Marista detention center, the headquarters of State Security in Havana.

After the meeting, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama reiterated its interest in ensuring that the legal process fully respects the rights of its citizens.

The Panamanian government requested guarantees such as respect for due process, the presumption of innocence, and access to adequate local legal assistance.

The Foreign Ministry also reported that, since the moment the detentions were known, the Embassy of Panama in Havana activated the corresponding protective and consular assistance mechanisms.

Panamanians were arrested last week after allegedly entering Cuba with the intention of creating and placing posters with critical messages against the Cuban regime.

According to the Ministry of the Interior of Cuba, those involved have reportedly acknowledged their participation in the events that took place in the capital. The authorities accuse them of engaging in activities deemed "subversive and contrary to constitutional order."

The detained individuals could face sentences of up to 10 years in prison, according to Cuban authorities.

The case has garnered diplomatic attention due to the seriousness of the charges brought by the Cuban authorities and the possibility of lengthy sentences for the Panamanian citizens.
