A Cuban expressed his outrage on social media after denouncing the high price of gasoline in the informal market on the Island, where, he claims, a liter is now being sold for about 5,000 Cuban pesos.
In a video shared on TikTok, the man recounted that he had just returned from the street very upset about the situation and decided to show the fuel he had managed to buy.
"I just came back incredibly insulted from the street. Look at this, look at what’s happening right now in Cuba. This is gasoline. Gasoline is already at 5,000 pesos per liter," he said while showing a container of fuel.
The Cuban explained that he bought only 10 liters, which amounts to about 50,000 Cuban pesos in the informal market.
According to his calculation, using the exchange rate published by the independent media outlet elTOQUE, where the dollar is around 510 Cuban pesos, the fuel cost him almost 100 dollars.
"We are talking about the fact that what I bought was 10 liters. Right now, that's 50,000 pesos. Let's round it up: it cost me almost 100 dollars to get 10 liters of gasoline," he stated.
The man assured that this amount would barely last him a few days, as he needs to use it both for commuting on his motorcycle and to fuel a power generator due to the prolonged blackouts.
"It’s not enough to last a week to be able to turn on the generator and move around on the motorcycle. It's not enough for anything because they are cutting off the power for 8, 10, 12, 15 hours. There are people who are losing it for a full day," he lamented.
The testimony reflects the impact of the energy and economic crisis that Cuba is facing, where prolonged blackouts and fuel shortages have driven up prices in the informal market, forcing many citizens to spend large amounts of money just to maintain basic services like electricity or transportation.
"What do we do, gentlemen? This is bad, bad, bad," the Cuban concluded in the video.
