The Cuban state television presented a report on Yarisel Martínez González, the director of fishing activities in the municipality of Guamá, in Santiago de Cuba, who promised that, at each table of the local population, there will be no shortage of fish.
The material was broadcasted by Canal Caribe, which highlighted the official's management of the basic fishing unit in the area and her aim to strengthen fishing activities in the coastal zone, a goal that seems to be beyond the realm of achievable dreams in a country in a state of ongoing crisis.
In the report, Martínez González explained that he took over the leadership of the sector after participating for two years in a project driven by the First Secretary of the Communist Party in the municipality, Lázaro Esposito Santos, aimed at promoting food production among families.
The official stated that species such as emperor snapper, needlefish, castero, and dorado are captured in the municipality, some of which are allocated to the fishing industry in Santiago de Cuba, while another portion is sold in fish markets or directed towards social projects.
It was also noted that currently 19 private vessels are participating in the fishing project in the area.
His goal, he stated during the report, is to turn the basic fishing unit into a provincial reference.
"Let everyone who arrives in Guamá be assured that fish will not be missing from their plate," he stated.
However, the message generated diverse reactions among users who commented on the video shared on social media.
Magdalena Álvarez Zayas reacted with irony: “Easy; draw a fish on a piece of paper and there you go, ready to eat.”
Luis Ángel Pérez was more direct in his criticism, stating, "You are the most shameless and deceitful person in all of Guamá."
Other users also expressed disbelief. Elien Pérez briefly commented, "Seriously?", while Leonor Martínez Pineda asked, "On what planet is that?".
Victor Pomares Padrón compared the promise to other official slogans that have been circulating for years. “From the creators of ‘there's everything in Marianao,’ now comes the claim that there is an abundance of fish in Guamá. What a lack of respect.”
Pedro Morales, for his part, made a sarcastic remark about the current economic situation. “It’s possible that there are fish in the waters of Cuba; of course, they don’t have tourists, so they go to waste.”
Gisela Labrada also questioned the scope of the promise by asking, “What about those who do not live in Guamá?”
Among the responses, there were also humorous comments, such as the one by Yoan Manuel Velásquez Villavicencio, who joked, “Why did you want to steal the voice of the little mermaid Ariel?”
Meanwhile, Melissa Torres left a sarcastic comment: “Do you want to tell him, or should I?”
