The Cuban influencer Flor de Cuba reignited the debate on social media with a TikTok video in which she speaks candidly about what she calls “infladencers”: women who, according to her, portray a life of luxury online without actually having the wealth they display. Her message quickly went viral and sparked all sorts of reactions among followers and critics.
Everything began with a comment questioning her earnings on TikTok Shop. One user claimed it was "a lie" that she made so much money because, according to her, Flor de Cuba "dresses in cheap clothes." However, instead of ignoring the comment, the influencer turned it into a broader reflection on appearances in social media.
In the video, she was direct: “Influencers are traumatizing the brains of real women”, she said. As she explained, many of the luxury handbags seen on social media were actually gifts from ex-partners. “The relationship with the man ended, and the handbag debuts on Instagram ended too,” she commented.
For Flor de Cuba, the problem lies in the notion that having money means displaying expensive things. According to her perspective, many people believe that success is measured by a wallet filled with thousands of dollars, even though the reality may be quite different, such as living in rented accommodation or lacking a solid economic foundation.
The content creator also took the opportunity to share her own story. She mentioned that she arrived in the United States just over a year ago with only $200 in her pocket, leaving her two children in Cuba. Since then, she claims to have achieved several important goals, such as buying a house for her mother on the island, sending her a modern car, and acquiring a property in Punta Cana, in addition to being in the process of purchasing a home in Miami close to a million dollars.
According to her explanation, a significant portion of that growth comes from her work on TikTok Shop, where she claims to have reached million-dollar sales figures. "I've attended meetings where I've earned up to 30 thousand dollars dressed in Shein. Respect doesn't come from a brand; it comes from what you build in life," she stated.
In the video, he also issued a warning to those who base their content solely on showcasing luxury items. "Do you know what happens when your content is only about showing brand-name things? People only follow you for that. And what would happen tomorrow if you can't show anything? Your engagement is over, your followers are gone," he pointed out. He summarized his philosophy with a clear statement: "My Instagram is not a fashion catalog. My Instagram is a catalog of my life, my story, and my personal growth."
